This project was
unique in that the home was built in the 1920s. In an
older home such as this, there are many considerations
that are taken for granted in newer homes. Issues such
as a code compliant egress window, stairway height and
width, a sewer line higher than floor level, casement
type windows that need replacement, plumbing and
electrical lines that have to be re-routed plus
numerous code issues. We were able to successfully
negotiate the often fine line between the homeowner's
wants and needs and the building department's many,
often conflicting, code requirements.
In this 500 square foot space we were able to include
a bedroom, full bathroom, laundry room, water heater
closet, an office complete with upper and lower
cabinets, a built-in gas fireplace surrounded by
stone, a built-in bookcase and access for the furnace
and crawl space. Quite a lot to fit into such a small
area but it ended up being very functional and
beautiful living space.
